Bhubaneswar Music Circle, established
in 1963, has the privilege of being the leading organisation to promote and
popularise classical music.
It has remained not only as the pioneer in the State but also the most active
cultural organisation of the city devoted to the cause of Indian Classical
Music and Dance. It is a registered body with membership of genuine music
lovers and leading performing artistes of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri. It
also has some members from far off places like Sambalpur, Rourkela, etc. It is
the only organisation that has been putting up music/dance programmes every
month throughout the year, every year, barring a few unavoidable occasions. The
BMC sponsors programmes of music and dance of Hindustani, Carnatic and Odissi
Schools. The artistes sponsored by the BMC are mostly of national/international
level and some of state level. It also encourages young and upcoming artistes
of the State by providing them platform and exposure essential for any aspiring
artiste. In addition to regular performances we have been holding Music
Appreciation seminar and Aasar/Baithak for music lovers.
BMC has about 180 active members whose subscription mainly keeps it going.
However, some music lovers, both corporate bodies as well as individuals - also
help BMC from time to time by sponsoring special music programmes and
particularly the Annual Festival events.
Resource crunch notwithstanding, BMC has, over the years, been able to bring to
Bhubaneswar such eminent artistes like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Bismillah Khan,
Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. V.G.
Jog, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Dr. M.
Balamuralikrishna, Smt. Girija Devi, Begum Parween Sultana, Smt. Malabika
Kanan, Shri Singh Bandhu, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pt. C.R. Jyotishi, Pt.
Manilal Nag, Ustad Rashid Khan, Smt. Aswini Bhide Deshpande and a host of
others. BMC believes 'Music is the soul of life' and it intends to carry on
this delightful activity, hopefully for ever.
It has been our constant endeavour to enrich the cultural milieu of Bhubaneswar
through quality programmes in performing arts. We have the
satisfaction that in recognition of our experience and expertise in organizing
musical programmes of serious genre, the Government of Orissa in the
Department
of Culture has entrusted us as
the Event Manager for Rajarani Festival, 2006.
